i found this book through the recommendation of Alice Hoffman. When a brilliant author recommends a book, the only sensible thing to do is read it... or at least it should be. And so, i did.
i went into this book thinking it may be a fun read for my son, but what i found was an engrossing and fun read for me. There is a fantastic Stand By Me feel as the narrator nostalgically reflects on his childhood with references from his present life - which we are privy to in brief glimpses at the beginning of each chapter. Jake, Dove and Billy lead the reader on a wonderful summer adventure, as the loss of childhood innocence creeps in. During their hesitant excitement chasing ghosts with the eccentric and lovable Uncle Calvin, they end up with insight into each other and themselves.
Would this be a fun read for my son, absolutely, but it may have been an even better read for me and anyone else enjoys mystery, fun, and a good excuse to remember the lasting bonds of their childhood friendships.
